Introducing the Revolutionary NEW WordPress Plugin!
Today at WordCamp San Francisco iFusion Labs demonstrated a new WordPress Integration Plugin which brings Woopra statistics right into your WordPress dashboard.
This is the first time any service provider has allowed users to embed Web Analytics within their own site, and it offers a number of benefits to Webmasters:
- Immediate access to analytics, traffic statistics and user visits from within the standard WordPress interface.
- Zero footprint on the local WordPress server speeds up your Web page loads without cluttering your database.
- Users can customize the statistics interface with simple CSS modifications.
- Users can modify the WordPress Plugin and contribute back to the community with changes and new ways to display the data.
- It’s light, Ajax enabled, and sexy!
The Woopra WordPress Integration Plugin is meant to augment, not replace, the Woopra Client. For the full Woopra experience the Client still offers live mapping, live user streaming, chat functionality, searches and more.
What may not be readily apparent from looking at the WordPress Pugin is that this is the first open application of the Woopra API, which will ultimately allow developers to build widgets, plugins and more.
To experience this powerful new feature, download the new Woopra WordPress Plugin, but please keep in mind that this is a BETA. There will be issues with it. Please report bugs and issues in the Woopra Forums.
Very special thanks goes out to Mark Jaquith for his assistance with the Woopra Plugin.
UPDATE: There is a known error that can occur for some WordPress blogs on line 21 in the Plugin. Please see Woopra WordPress Plugin - Looking for Conflicts for information and a solution.
WordPress Beta testers are encouraged to keep putting this Plugin through its paces and to report in the Woopra Forum on bugs and errors so we can ensure this Plugin works across a wide spectrum of WordPress blogs. Thank you!

Looks great, but calling the analytics from main menu raises a 404 error. calling from dashboard submenu is ok, but there are no results…
August 16th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
That’s interesting that the date range picker in the top right says Aug 4-10, but the stats themselves say July 4-10.
You guys have serious issues with everything related to dates and time zones. Are you ever going to fix any of that or just let people keep complaining about it on the forums all the time?
August 16th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Also:
“This is the first time any service provider has allowed users to embed Web Analytics within their own site”
This is incorrect. W3counter has offered a similar plugin for quite a while now.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Not working for me either. Im using wordpress 2.6.1 added the API key and the Member ID
August 17th, 2008 at 3:08 am
i’m waiting for stable version.
August 17th, 2008 at 3:25 am
@cowboyofbottrop - Hmmm. Interesting… It’s currently working over on my personal blog, and it’s also working on Woopra.com, but I’m sure there are going to be some strange issues like this.
I also saw a situation where a user could not get the plugin to activate at all. We’ll be looking into these issues over the coming week or two, but please let us know if you figure out what is happening on your end.
@Interesting - I’m not seeing that issue, on any blog I check. Perhaps you can check and make sure your browser is not caching incorrectly?
As far as W3counter is concerned, I stand corrected! Good for them! I wouldn’t say they’ve been doing it for “quite a while”, but apparently they did launch it in April.
On a side note, I am wondering why you choose to continually post challenging or negative comments on the blog here, especially given the fact that you’ve used multiple pseudonyms on various articles. Are you a competitor? Are you just naturally cynical? Are you not enjoying your Woopra account?
There are only two developers on the entire Woopra project at the moment, and they are making tremendous strides. 99% of the date functionality works perfectly, so saying there are “serious issues with everything related to dates and time zones” is patently false. There are however a couple of issues, and we’ll be working on them soon. They were not high on the priority list since they do not affect core functionality.
@Joel - Sorry to hear that it isn’t working for you. Can you tell me if it’s actually activating? Or is it failing to even activate?
John
August 17th, 2008 at 3:28 am
@epat - If you are referring to the plugin, it’s 100% stable for me at the moment, and it won’t hurt anything to give it a try. If it doesn’t work you can delete it and go back to the previous plugin. I’d say, give it a try!
John
August 17th, 2008 at 8:31 am
@epat - Ditto. Been running the plugin for about 5 days now without any problems.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:07 am
I feel silly asking this question, but where exactly does my API key and Woopra Site ID info go? I clicked Woopra Analytics on my WP Dashboard after activating the plugin. I’d appreciate someone’s help either here or twitter me, I’m Table4Five.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Elizabeth, in your WP Dashboard, click Settings. You should then see a tab for Woopra, and the Woopra ID and API key go into the first 2 blanks.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:21 am
John, this new application plugin sounds great! I really am enjoying Woopra’s features, and I’m amazed at how tracking the keywords people use to come to my sites have given me numerous new post ideas! I will probably add the plugin to my WP blogs at some point, but for the time being I’m happy with Woopra as is.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Not working for me. API key and member ID are filled in, date range fields are blank.
August 17th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
The updated plugin (wp) first trigerred an error message, I looked in the forums, changed as suggested by “shane” line 21 in woopra.php, now there is no error message anymore, but th enew woopra plugin still doesn´t work. Any suggestions?
Thanks
August 17th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
John, the screenshot you posted speaks for itself! The selected date range is August, but the stats showing are for July! I’m not just making that up. It’s right there in your blog post.
I call things like I see them. Naturally cynical, I guess. The same threads about the wrong date or time zone keep popping up again and again in the forums. I don’t think anyone other than a Woopra team member would say that the date functionality is 99% perfect.
August 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I installed the plugin from a download I pulled today into a WP 2.6.1 blog.
Entered my WebsiteID and API Key as listed on my Woopra account settings. Activated the plugin. Went to the WP Dashboard and clicked Woopra Analytics and entered a date range.
There is zero/nothing/nada displayed.
I am running FireFox 3 on an Windows XP Pro laptop. (if that helps)
Help?
I absolutely love the tracking and have it on several blogs, but would like to see it in the blog dashboard itself (great idea). Any suggestions?
August 17th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I am also unable to activate the plug in. Usiung WP 2.6.1
August 17th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Thanks for the reply John, I would like to congratulate you on the new woopra 1.2 (but I preffered the older one without ads - Just my opinion)
Well Im having the same problem as Cenay above.
Plugin is getting activated fine….
but Its not displaying any data whatsoever, (see image) I really hate to complain (since its a beta)
but was waiting to blog about it, but all I got was disappointment.
Im using Wordpress 2.6.1 (maybe its not yet compatible with 2.6.1?)
Please help me out. Thank you.
August 18th, 2008 at 2:10 am
I’ve been looking forward (and still am) for a plugin that enables me to show the live user count on my pages, without cluttering the database. It would be cool to get just the number and be able to style it the way we want, like some of us do with Feedburner subscriptions. That would be awesome and I’m sure many would adopt Woopra only for that feature.
Secondly, the map showing users online would be cool as well, but if I had to choose I’d still go for the live user count. In fact, the most impressive Woopra feature is still the live user tracking. That’s the juice’s nectar to me.
August 18th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Fantastic plugin! It works like a charm for me. Thanks for all the good work!
August 18th, 2008 at 10:02 am
@ Wallace Rodrigues:
The stats for Woopra are not stored in the WordPress database, so your wish is granted on that one by default.
Live user count displays are on the blackboard, so stay tuned. Be sure and add these feature requests to the forum where they are tracked.
For all bug reports and troubleshooting, be sure and check out the Woopra Forums for solutions and to make your report. Remember that Woopra and the Plugin are beta versions, thus are expected to have problems as we work to improve them across a wide spectrum of servers, setups, and browsers. Thanks!
August 18th, 2008 at 10:15 am
@ Lorelle
I really appreciate, all the hard work the Woopra team is putting to make this plugin perfect and I hate to complain coz I love Woopra a lot. but why aren’t the development team not responding to any threads on the forums???
I want to see the plugin working but still seems I’m out of luck
August 18th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
@ Joel:
The developers are on flight to Lebanon. They will be signing on as soon as they land and sleep for a few minutes.
The rest of us are doing our best between flights and work to help out. We have a great Woopra beta testing community and they are also helping each other a lot. We appreciate it greatly that everyone is working so hard to help Woopra be a success. Thanks for your support.

Well actually, he’s right. If you look at the screenshot you posted yourself you will see it.
At the top right it says ‘From: 2008-08-04 To: 2008-08-10′, yet the dates of the actual stats shown, in the Day column, are ‘July 10, 2008′, ‘July 9, 2008′, … ‘July 4, 2008′.
Seems like a bug to me. But of course I haven’t tried the real thing, as my site still hasn’t been approved. (Suggestion: Disable the signup form until you’re ready for people to use it.)
August 18th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
@ caesarsgrunt:
The date bug issues have been problematic, and well reported. Thank to everyone to continue to report on these in the forums, especially to those with specific details to help us determine which systems are affected and why.
As for the approval sign ups, we release approvals in batches, so having the sign up form allows us to approve them en mass when resources are available to do so. With more than 30,000 beta testers, we are continuing to limit access as Woopra is still in development and we’d like to make as few people as possible suffer bumps and bruises natural in the beta testing phase.
Thank you for your continued support.

There is a list of bugs that we are fixing right now and we will upload the new version within a few days.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
great plugin bro…very good..
August 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
It’s stupid question time, sorry about that.
Does this new plugin take the place of the original Woopra plugin or is it supposed to run along side of it meaning does the new plugin add the tracking code as the first Woopra plugin did? Like I said, dumb question but for some reason I’m being rather dense today.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Actually, I’ve ‘applied’ at WOOPRA, but it still says my application is pending. I have not received an API from them. If I download this new thing, will I get an API?
August 19th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
@ Kirk M:
This is the replacement Plugin - it’s the updated version. Remove the old and replace it with the new, filling in the tracking code and such. It’s a good question, so thank you for asking.
sheiglah: As soon as resources are available, we will open it up to more beta testers. The API is in development and will be released soon. You don’t “get” an API, you get to use Woopra if you are approved. The API is for developers who want to develop programs and increased functionality to Woopra.

I should have known better!

i`m really looking forward to a final plugin version and think it`s a next improvement to the whole woopra service. Thank you very much for your work and thanks to automatic making it possible, of course.

Again, another unusable, seriously flawed release from Woopra.
I normally wouldn’t complain about free stuff, but Woopra forgets that when they release any sort of beta people will spend a lot of time trying to get it to work - and time is money. So, they need to spend a lot more time developing stuff BEFORE releasing it to beta.
More importantly, they need to spend more money and time on product development than PR, which is really all I’ve seen them do successfully.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Hi, I’m not writing to complain lol. I’m writing in the interest of #1 getting it to work and #2 helping to resolve the issue. I’d rather be part of the solution than complain, so here’s what I have. I’m one of the people for which the wordpress plugin won’t activate at all. My Wordpress version is 2.5.1. I’ve copied the error message in case you need it:
“Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /home/wholyone/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/woopra_wordpress/woopra.php on line 21″
In the spirit of actively helping to resolve beta issues, is there something I can change on line 21 to get it to work? If there’s something you want me to try, let me know and I’ll give it a whirl and report back. You can reach me at cynthia[at]cynthiaclinton.com if you want me to try something.
The desktop client installed flawlessly and all looks awesome so far.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@David,
You may not realize it, but we have exactly two full time people (Elie and Jad, our developers), and three part time people, working on Woopra at this time.
As I’m sure you’re aware from the fact that all users have to be approved, we are in closed Beta development. This means that the service is only appropriate for people who don’t mind testing and reporting bugs.
In addition to scaling up the application, servers and infrastructure to handle nearly 35,000 users and over 40 million page views per day, Elie and Jad have also managed to squash hundreds of bugs, develop an open API, and build the WordPress plugin as an example of what is possible.
Before we released it, the plugin was tested by multiple people and we even had one of the core WordPress developers go through it. It is working flawlessly for a lot of people as we speak, so to claim that it is “unusable and seriously flawed” is, in my opinion, unwarranted. On top of all of that, I specifically stated in the post:
The point of sharing this plugin was to put it in the hands of the community. The plugin is complex, but it is also is entirely open so anyone - even yourself - could hop in and repair it and contribute it back. In fact, we’d be happy to publicly share credit with anyone who wants to advance the ball here so we can get back to working on the core.
As far as PR is concerned, we haven’t spent a single penny promoting Woopra. Everything you’ve seen is simply buzz coming from the community. Although we have a PR company, they are merely coordinating my time because I couldn’t handle all the inbound inquiries while taking care of my day job and my other responsibilities.
I took the time to write this because we want you on board. We’re literally working 7 days a week, and we’re trying to change the world. There are 3 of us, and 30,000 of you. We really need your support here, not resistance.

So… I like the desktop app a lot, though I wish I could run it on my Mac. The WordPress plugin isn’t working for me though — I get the screen that asks me for a date range but otherwise does nothing.
When you actually get two seconds to take a breath, you might consider putting the Woopra stats into a WordPress Dashboard widget so it shows up there directly. That would be the ultimate in easy interface — it’s just there when I log on.
(If you do that though, make it optional….)
Thanks for all the work. Can’t wait to see the new version working!
August 21st, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I don’t criticize to heavily for bugs in a beta, because that’s what betas are for. I do have one thing that you really ought to change — and it will only take you about three seconds –
The version number of the plugin should say “beta”, e.g. “1.2-beta”. The other option would be to have a sub-1 version, e.g. “0.2″ (but too late for that one…)
1.2 is the version number of a production-level product, IMO. I’m not surprised a lot of people are treating it as such and complaining.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
@ Strider:
Thank you for your feedback. The current version of the Woopra beta desktop client does run on Mac, unless you have a VERY old version. We worked very hard to make it backwards compatible to accommodate older operating systems of Mac.
Thank you also for your feedback on the version numbers. Unfortunately, few hold true to those older standards for number and beta any more. We’ll take it under advisement, though.
The Woopra stats in the WordPress Administration Panels is something much requested. We are working on it. Be sure and make all such requests in the Feature Request area of the Forum so we can track them. Thank you.
The same applies to all your bug reports. We welcome them in the Woopra Forums so our team can track and respond to reports. We appreciate all your hard work and look forward to hearing from you there.

The datepicker doesn’t work for me. (I’m assuming it’s supposed to popup a calendar or something)?? Additionally, I cannot enter the date manually — I think this should be allowed and a note should be made on the page showing the default date format you are looking for.
