Woopra 1.3 RC1 Desktop Application Released
Well it’s been months in the making, but today we are pre-releasing the new Woopra 1.3 with Release Candidate 1 for serious testers. On behalf of the entire iFusion Labs team, I want to thank you all for your patience while we prepared this next major release of the Woopra client.
The new Woopra client incorporates so many bug fixes, feature requests and general improvements that it would be impossible to cover them all. But I’d like to run through several of the changes and allow you guys to discover the rest. In fact, we’re planning on doing a follow up post which includes links to the overviews that you all create about the new release, so if you do one (especially a video walk through) drop a comment below and we’ll include it in the next blog post.
If you are one of the brave ones who are willing to download and give this version a try, read on and you’ll find the download links at the bottom of this post. Some users will need to manually uninstall the old version and then install the new one… but we think you’ll agree, it’s worth it!
If you would like to wait while the rest of the Woopra beta testers team puts the Release Candidate to the test, just keep using the previous version of Woopra. When the final release is ready, Woopra will automatically upgrade when you open the program. Simple and easy!
Now, on to the list!
-
1. Basic Updates:
- Over the past 4 months, the Woopra desktop application has been almost completely recoded with a whole new range of extensibility in mind. This new version incorporates the framework for plugins management in the future releases, so to all you developers out there, start thinking of new ways you can extend the Woopra feature set now – and let us know if you want to be among the first to help test the new framework.
-
One of the most requested features has been the ability to individually connect and disconnect websites in the desktop application, and Woopra now delivers!
You no longer have to connect to all of your websites when logging in. Simply connect and disconnect when you want to see the data, and take control over auto-starting for each of your domains.
This feature is useful for webmasters who have multiple websites added to their Woopra Accounts. Connecting to only one, or a few, site at a time will save bandwidth, memory and CPU resources on your local machine as well as helping conserve Woopra data center resources. It’s the “Green” thing to do.
-
Woopra now auto-reconnects the websites if they get disconnected for any reason. In testing, we’ve found that laptops can now be put in standby, and when reopened Woopra will connect back up and keep delivering the stats! It’s a huge time saver, and functions quite reliably.
- Woopra has an updated look and feel which includes a new exclusive set of icons which work perfectly no matter which color theme you choose for a site (you do know you can customize the color scheme by selecting the tab at the top, don’t you?).
- Speaking of look and feel, an all new icon has been created to live in your task bar, so say hi to the new Woopra Spy mascot! We just love him, and we hope you do too.
-
If you are using Mac OS X, you now have the exclusive ability to see the number of online visitors in the dock icon (Dock Badge). Simply right click on the icon and you’ll see the menu option to enable the live visitor count.
-
2. Webmaster Tools:
-
Let’s talk about functionality for a moment, shall we? We know that a lot of people enjoy keeping Woopra running in the background all day long while multi-tasking. And since we all share a common set of needs as Webmasters, we thought it would be useful to incorporate a set of tools into the application to help increase productivity.
The new Webmaster Tools area should prove to be a huge timesaver for anyone who routinely needs to look up common Webmaster information. There will be a number of tools available, so if you have specific ideas please let us know (and provide a sample link if possible).
The new Whois domain checker will quickly allow you to find out who the registrant (owner) of a domain is.
-
The Pagerank checker (Google Pagerank and Alexa) allows you to quickly gauge the popularity of a given Web property.

3. Sidebar:
-
One of the major design changes for the new client is the all new sidebar. The sidebar replaces the old side “tabs” which switched between the Dashboard, Live and Analytics tabs. The new sidebar allows for much better organization, and handling of an ever expanding list of consecutive activities.
The first thing you’ll notice is the relocation of the main Live visitor counter and histogram. We found that this was a favorite feature in the previous version, but it required far too much screen real estate. So this function was placed in prime view at the top left of the screen where it can be easily monitored.
Below the counter, you’ll find the Menu, Reports, and Manage functions. And a few others will appear when they are in use, such as Chat and later… Plugins.

-
4. Dashboard View:
-
The Dashboard has received a complete overhaul, so it might take a little getting used to for those who were accustomed to the old view.
The first thing you’ll notice is that there are now 6 “panes” of information, where the old client had 5. And the hourly and daily visitor counts in the top left have been replaced by a graphical representation of recent site traffic, overlayed against historical average traffic.
Hovering the mouse over any point will instantly display the visitor count for that point in time.
-
In the bottom right corner one of the most popular Woopra features, the live Map, has been incorporated directly onto the dashboard. It shows the current visitors to the website overlayed against a world map.
This map is fully zoomable and movable by useing a mouse with a scroll wheel, and there are currently two different colors which appear on the map to represent visitors to the site. Orange visitors have just arrived and are viewing their first page. Blue visitors have seen more than one page.
More graphical visitor differentiation is planned in the future, but for right now there is also a country overlay which can be hidden or displayed with a text count of visitors from each locale.
-
Perhaps the most exciting feature in the new 1.3 release is built right into the Dashboard. All new popup menus are now available with a simple right click on almost any piece of data which allows you to Analyze that variable in detail. A right click also allows for other functionality such as checking pagerank or whois information by passing the data directly to the Webmaster Tools area. (Another good reason to let us know what tools you would like to see added!)

The Dashboard has received a complete overhaul, so it might take a little getting used to for those who were accustomed to the old view.
-
5. Live View:
- The Live View tab, which shows the current visitors on a website, has undergone some changes as well.
- The panels in the Live View are now resizable (using the Split Panes). Just hover your mouse over the divider between the panes and you can drag them to a new size.
-
A small Map was added to the visitor information on the far right to give a graphical representation of their location.
- If you never used it before, there is a search field at the top of the pane, and it now filters all the live panels. So if you want to see only visitors using the Safari browser, for instance, just type Safari in the search panel. Make sure and clear the search when you’re done by selecting the X on the right side of the search.
-
Major updates also come to the full screen Live Map! (Which can be accessed via the small arrow in the top right corner.) And one of the most highly requested features has been completed. Woopra will now run the Live map on a secondary monitor without obstructing the primary monitor!
So you can have the dashboard running on monitor 1 and the live map on monitor 2 if you’d like. Or the live map on monitor 1, while you continue other work on monitor 2. You choose!
- Additional bug fixes have improved functionality which was previously causing instability with heavy traffic websites.
-
6. Search View:
- The all important search function received only minor updates in this release, such as the fact that data now defaults to an expanded view, preloaded wit visitor actions.
-
7. Calendar View:
-
The brand new Calendar view is a great new feature that shows you the visits and pageviews by day, day of week, weak of year and month!
This all new view sums up the totals both down the column for days, and across the row for weeks, and also shows the monthly total in the top left corner. This view makes it very easy to spot trends over time, and allows Webmasters to view the critical monthly totals that help to determine trends over time.

-
8. Analytics View:
-
Without a doubt, these new Segmentation Reports are one of the biggest additions to the Woopra service, and not only required a major overhaul of the desktop application, but also a re-architecting of the back end server and database functionality. A monumental amount of work went into delivering these reports, and this was probably the most requested feature lacking in version 1.2 and previous releases.
The new segmentation reports can be accessed by using the new right-click “Analyze” functionality present on the Dashboard. When selected, this feature runs a live custom report and appears in a list under “Reports” in the sidebar. These reports will show ONLY the statistics associated with that one variable.
For example, you can analyze a specific referrer URL, a specific page on your web site, or even a search engine keyword. We don’t even know how all you guys are going to use this functionality, so please share feedback about how you utilize the information!

-
9. Chat View:
-
For those of you who frequently use the built in Woopra chat functionality, you will notice that the chat sessions no longer appear in external windows. They are now embedded in the client and appear in a list in your sidebar. This makes managing multiple sessions much simpler, and each chat will show a live number to represent the number of unread messages in that session.
A huge expansion of the chat capabilities is already ready for launch, and we’ll be setting it live in the next couple of weeks or so.

10. Notification Filters:
-
One very popular feature of Woopra is the ability to set custom notifications to let you know when certain actions occur on your site. For example, being notified when a known visitor reappears, or a certain page is viewed.
But now, you can also be notified when a visitor commits a custom action. For example, you can be notified when someone submits a comment, or does a search on your WordPress blog, or even completes a transaction on your eCommerce site!
We’ll more fully document this new capability in a future blog post. (Unless one of you cares to explore this new function and document it for us! If so, please let us know in the comments.)

11. Exclude Visitors:
-
One more long awaited feature is the ability to exclude certain pages and visitors by ID, Name or IP from being tracked in Woopra. This is one of the most requested features, and it’s now available as an option under the Manage area in the Sidebar.
Simply choose the Exclude Visits link in the sidebar and enter the data you would like to exclude. The application will allow for as many filters as you wish.

So, that’s a pretty good overview of what is in store with this new release!

The calendar view looks a bit weird here with me. The row of sundays is moved one row up, which causes the first Sunday to be skipped, and leaves a free day where the last Sunday should have been:

There’is any problem with Linux installer…
Really very interesting, the dashboard, that the changes introduced.

Looking good! No, looking great!!!
Wow. I cant’ imagine not having Woopra and these new developments mean I’m going to be even more dependant upon it. Thanks guys!!
Hello there
Congratulations, I’ve just started to use the new app and it is really a major improvement.
Gonna spend some time now having fun with it. It’s packed with new features!
Thanks for the good work!
Wow.
Huge update.
Great work guys!
Well done guys, you also surprised me! For sure positive!
I just miss the “overview-screen” in the live view.
Looking forward for the next development!
Try it now.
Wow the conversion tracker is nice!
Woo, this version supports Chinese much better~~
Post updated regarding the Linux Installer.
When I try to Mac OSX one it freezes immediately after it tries to start up and then I have to force quit it :(.
PC version looks awesome though as I have both :)
I was testing the [Start A Conversation] feature and the end user/visitor never receives the notification pop up showing that somone on our side is trying to start a conversation. Is anyone else noticing this issue?
For mac users. When you install the 1.3 RC1 client, install it or copy it to the 1.2 woopra folder on your system.
The intaller is only the binary.
It worked for me to copy the new woopra binary that was installed in /Applications/ to my 1.2 woopra folder.
Sweet, I will give the new app a try!

I second the calendar issue with Sundays being listed on the week before.
I wonder if this is an issue with people that starts their week on Mondays and not Sundays?
One other thing – I really would like to have the ability to move the sites listed in the top bar and sidebar – so I can move up my important sites and move down the ones that are less important.
I really do like the new look though! Excellent job guys!

Looks gorgeous, folks! Thanks so much!
One niggle: when (right-)clicking on a given referrer link, I’m no longer shown (on hover) or taken to the specific page from which the referral came, but just the top-level domain address. Have been poking the analytics menu to try to get more info, but no luck yet. Possibly just something I haven’t figured out how to work yet… :)
Again, though, great work!!
On the old version, I used a socks proxy to login because I couldn’t login from behind my firewall at work.
On the new version, I can’t login at all.
The socks proxy works, and I’m using it for another tool right now.
Windows: Can’t login from behind a firewall, socks proxy not seeming to be picked up.
On the old version I could login just fine, pointing it at localhost:1080
Though it DID pick up my old settings, which was nice :)
W O W, excellent!! thanks a lot :D

AWESOME !!! Simply AWESOME
What a nice and elegant graphics, of course besides the interesting functionalities !!
Servers seem to be down for awhile now.
Looks great. Can’t wait to check out all the new features unfortunately, after working for about an hour this morning, I’ve been able to login okay via the client but neither of my sites are able to connect to the servers for several hours now.
Hope things willbe back up and running soon.
Awesome job folks! Just what the doctor ordered. I am downloading RC now.
Great job guys! The new client looks awesome and I absolutely love all the new functionality.
Keep up the super work!
Guys, you are best! Excellent release…
Superb woopra team, you made an outstanding tool simply better.
I had a look at our users browsers stated language. To my surprise, the second language after English was… German… (?) followed closely by Swedish, Russian, French, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Japanese etc. We’ll have to tailor to German Expats more perhaps and good to know.
To check what language your users stated preference is:
Go to analytics, systems, browsers, then select language.
Presto.

I found a bug.
In the Analytics section, there are 2 Referer under equal sections, and RD Regular Domains.
In section RD data overlap and are not clearly visible.
That’s a cool thing. I m surely going to try it and will tell my blog readers about it.
@ Thendenze:
Be sure and report all bugs in the Woopra forums so we can track them. Thanks. This helps make Woopra better for everyone.

Hi, I love the new Features Webmastertools, Exlude Vistits and show countries, sorry but not the new Dasboard.
(I like the Icon from v1.2, because the new interface is to red, also the Calender)
I think that Dasboard of v1.2 and v1.3 of the functions would be great.
The Calender is good, but a switch to table would be even better (option)
The background is very dark and can not be changed. (only black, dark blue and red …)
Next I like the keywords on the Dasboard not. (Only Option)
And the Live Viewer don´t work in Fullscreen Mode. Only I move the Mouse then I can see the map for 1 second.

Trelas
Hi Elie and Woopra team
Congratulation, it’s great.
The only thing is disturbing me, it’s that now the order of the TABS depends on a “random” factor, so, sometimes I have a site in first position and next it will be the at the 3rd…
For me it was always a nice-to-have feature, the possibility to organize the tabs in my order, but now, with this new behavior it become a must-have.
But again!!! nice job!

Very very very nice!
Thanks for all. :)
So, after testing it a little, I am very satisfied by this new release.
The only thing I need is a tutorial to get a better notification with the comment text and the search query (is it “visitor custom value”? doesn’t work at wall with this tag).
And why not a compatibility with Growl? :)
Good Boogly Woogly, you guys ROCK! Amazing just got AMAZING-ER!
I am formally tattooing Woopra on my Butt!
A hugely loyal fan and user,

Krikee,
The last blog post garnered 2 or 3 responses. You come out of the wood work ?

Hi , I Install This New Version , But It Have Some Problem .
1. If I Right Click On My Search , Show Menu Without Any Option , I Mean Just Show 3 Option But The Text Was Gone ( Hidden , And I Can See Them )
2. In Analytics , For Me The RD Page Dont Show Correctly , Content Must Show At Left , But They Show In Center Behind Their View .
Thanks

After upgrading to 1.3RC1 the menus are there but the menu text is not. That is when we right-click a menu pops-up and we can highlight the entries and click and get them to call their function, we just can’t see any text so we’re not sure what we are clicking on. All other text displays fine.
After upgrade, the new pop-up menus function but display no text so we can’t tell what we are selecting. All other test displays fine.
Overall, like the changes. A couple items I’ve found:
[1] Much like the last version, the Referrer list does not update live for me. The “My Searches” section does, but not the referrers. I have to disconnect and reconnect to the site for that list to update.
[2] Also like the last version, the timestamp in the bottom task bar is off by an hour for me. I am in EDT, and the timestamp was fine up until last weekend when we changed the clocks. Now the timestamp is an hour behind. Perhaps it goes without saying, but the clock on my PC is correct. :) I should note that in the Live section, the timestamps for each visitor is correct.
[3] I liked having the Overview section (TV, AV, TP, AP) at the top of the Live page, so I could watch both. I find the graph to be too small now to be of much use, and without the ability to toggle between visitors and pages, the TPvs line obscures the Avg Vts line, at least for my small site. :)
Thanks…

The chat function isn’t worling….
Happy to see this new release but wish there were some more flexibility with this software to allow for entering proxy details which require authentication. I use Woopra at home (sad) for student flights but cannot check it at the office because of the limited options for proxy configuration. You’ve gone to effort of allowing custom fonts, how about some added tools for the users on a strict corporate network.

I found how you view countries and it was just straight up, but how do you view states in the U.S? If this is not currently available it would be a good idea. It might be nice to be able eventually do it with any country that has regions or states.
I am using Windows Vista Ultimate, SP 1, 32-bit, 1GB RAM
I start Woopra and it loads the icon in the Notification Area (a.k.a. System Tray)
I close Woopra after more than 1hr and try to restart it. Can’t.
I click Exit on the Woopra icon in the Notification Area
if (successful) I am able to restart Woopra, else (restart Vista)
The reason I need to restart Woopra is because new traffic is not updated on My Pages, My Referrers, and Geography, and ESPECIALLY in the Search window.
When I click Home, Disconnect, Connect, it takes for ever.
When I Sign out, thn sign in, it reconnects quickly.
The most recent entry under Search takes a loOong time to display, IF it ever does.
Suggestion – a Refresh button to update the data displayed for ALL variables. The Search page is always outdated (does not have the latest one or two visits). This was a problem also with Woopra 1.2 Beta.
—–
I just closed Woopra and couldn’t restart.
Closed the Notification Area icon, then was able to restart Woopra.
This is a consistent behaviour.
The Search page is still not showing the last visitor to my site. I know who it was because I watched that visitor for over 2 minutes.
@Iakov: Thank you for the feedback. Remember to check in the Forums for updates and to report on these issues, too. You might find the answers there from others with similar problems. If the problems persist, please use the older version of Woopra until we release the public Woopra version.
The time seems OK, but required A LOT OF WORK in 1.2.
Had to log into woopra.com to set the time zone there. Woopra didn’t recognize the time zone immediatey, and so it took a while for the client to pick up the time zone change in my woopra.com settings. Even then, it was sometimes ahead or behind by 1 hr.
Simple solution – Let the Woopra client use the local system time. The computer’s user/s usually have this set to the correct zone and time. All the client has to do is use the local time to avoid all the hassle.
I am not having time issues now, but at least one post above has mentioned this problem.
Today Visits and Today pageviews in the top left corner of the client are different from Visits and Pageviews under Analytics.
I have never understood how the percentages to the right of the Pageviews column under Analytics are determined. Would somebody please explain?
Search is definitely missing the last visitor. This is a consistent behaviour that has happened again since my post above, even after closing and opening Woopra twice. Both restarts required the Woopra demon in the Notification Area to be exited first.

@Aziz: We do not currently send files or respond via email, only on the forums and this blog and social media services, for customer support. We will be announcing the next release candidate (testing version) of Woopra soon and news about working with proxies. There are also some answers in the Woopra Forum that might work for you.
I’ve found Woopra Installers for Max OS will not complete unless you are logged in to the computer as an Administrator.
Woopra for MAC does not appear support the feature in the OSX API that opens a Username/Password Dialog to verify Administrator credentials before installing an application as a limited user. Rather than prompt, check, and complete, Woopra aborts installation because “You do not have permission to write to the folder /Applications”.
The work-around for this bug is to log out of your OS X session and log back in as an Admin, install Woopra, log out, and log back in as your normal “Limited” user account.

We need to know which operating system you are using, which version of Java, if you ever got it to work, and other details to help us break this down. By listing it in the forum, others can check in if they are having the same problem. That will help us figure out what is going on and reproduce the problem.

Sorry but i think that 1.2 is better then 1.3
The usability and everything is more comfortable then in 1.3
Even 1.3 got great fcutures as calendar and webmaster tool and etc, the 1.2 is easy nice looking dashbord is great and design of the apps is better then 1.3
Hope you will just stay with woopra 1.2 design and just add the futures of 1.3 to it and not changing the whole stuff becouse it is so borring.
i uninstall the 1.3rc becouse of that and istall the 1.2 verion becouse it is more usability and greater then next version.
@svipic: Woopra 1.3 RC1 was advised to be only for the serious beta testers, not for those not willing to test Woopra in its various stages to help us improve. Thanks for your input. Be aware that when Woopra 1.3 comes out of the release candidate stage, all Woopra Members will be automatically upgraded to the new stable version.
@steelyd: Fonts are currently not customizable. An API is coming out soon as we finish the testing and release of the latest version as we’ve totally rewritten the code under the hood. Thanks.

Woopra Rocks!!
Only one but… But the text-color (orange) is blinding me… Please change this, like it was in 1.2.
Anyway thanks for this great system!
@hibbit: The next version release will feature a totally customizable interface so you can choose whatever colors you want. :D
Could we please look at Growl notifications for RC2 on the Mac? The present notification system is fine, however it means I have two different types on my computer now. Many apps use Growl these days so please provide the option.

very nice updates , thanks for the woopra team
Hey Lorelle. I have only just realized that I have been seriously lacking in feedback for getting access to the awesome 1.3 RC beta. Apologies. Here are my 2 pennies worth….following your request (and format)
1. Connect/Disconnect: Mine works fine.
2. Webmaster Tools: http://www.woopra.com/forums/topic/ip-blocking I could use a custom look-up for my IP…with a button to exlude me ..(rather than getting me to go look it up). The option to do this globally would be ideal too. I have explained more in detail in the above thread.
3. Sidebar Dashboard Summary: Key info is easy to see at a glance
4. Navigation: Side bar navigation is improved…I would like to be able to assign them to collapsible categories that help me move my way around a large number of sites.
5. Right Click Menu Options: The only right click actions that did not open the actual web page are from the main dashboard. Here I get 3 options when rt clicking on the pages visited & country. This mini report then pops into the side bar…rather cool. Extending this into other parts of the site may be a handy way of providing segmentation…..(i.e. show which pages people visited AFTER this page…to give pathway. Or..Show which pages people visited BEFORE this page =success event if carried out on a success event page)
6. Analytic Reports: Do you want more YES PLEASE.. Like which pages they went on to see I off this specific topic, but still in the ballpark of analytic reporting, I find that when I change the “view by date” (top right) it does not transpose into the results. If I set the date to be just today, I want to see just the visits today, and which pages etc. As it is, I get all pages this month and no ability to drill down for some reason
7. Live View: We’ve added a geographic location map to the live visitor information, showing you where the visitor is coming from. Does this help and more information to your visitor monitoring experience YES THIS HELPS….it helps signal to me, when a webpage has hit the front page IN THAT COUNTRY. Would it be possible to get more specific with the locality…i.e. by city…
8. Interface Resizing: Most of the sections on each panel in Woopra can be resized. Have you experimented with it? Not yet…this part is not that intuitive
9. Search on Live Panels: There is a search field at the top of the Live View panel. Have you used it to filter through the live visitor panel views? No not yet…but will have a go
10. Multiple Monitors setup OK..just found it but only because you mentioned it here. Perhaps stick a hover tag over the ‘pop’ arrow that indicates the the live map can be popped out to a second monitor. I have a standard windows setup for 1 & 2 monitor..(sorry not sure of the technical term here…I mean from the windows monito configuration interface). Woopra asks for Monitor 0 or 1 for the map pop-out. Here’s my reusults: If Woopra is loaded up into the right hand monitor (my windows monitor 2), and I pick 1…then I get it all in the right hand monitor…alternating between the woopra panel and the world map. If instead I drag the woopra interface into the left hand (number 1 in windows) and select monitor 1 as the location for the world map (i.e. windows monitor 2). Then it works. But it’s a bit flakey. And not very stable. Very Cool feature though!
11. The Search Panel How can we improve this? Can you give us some information in a pop up window that educates us on the filter tags and their syntax.
12. Calendar: I don’t find this as useful as other areas right now as-is…not sure. It is not very useful predominantly because it is just numbers. If a background line chart could be included on each day, it would give more at-a-glance info across the week how the traffic is varying. Then if we could also select to see by page across the week, it would give some idea of segmentation of pages. I.e. how are my information pages being consumed & when vs. how are my sales page click through’s doing through the week. This would give me an idea of when to publish the information vs. when to launch my offers. If this is possible, it would be ideal to visually chart up to 3 – 5 pages in the calendar view. From a marketing perspective…they would be landing page –opt in page –success page 1 – upsell page1- upsell success page 1. If you wanted to go the whole hog…then include the ability to set up custom reports that can pull in pages by the user. Then create an email form that allows us to email that week/day/month report….it would be sweet to be able to email this directly to clients/decision makers.
In an ideal world, there would also be an option to define the exact time period too (of a campaign or promotion)….i.e. one week. 10 days 3 weeks.
This is great feedback. Don’t forget to track the information and reports in the Forum for answers to most of these issues. Thanks!
Great piece of software. Good job.
It would be more convenient to see visitors history button next to ‘Analytics’ in main menu. I found it in chat window – ‘Lookup history’ (strange place for such important information). Generally, it should provide the same information as web based Visitors>Logs.
