Woopra Officially Exits Beta
Well, the day has finally come. It simultaneously feels like its been both forever, and just yesterday, since we started developing Woopra. Today, I’m happy to announce the beginning of Woopra General Availability!
Let’s talk a little about what that means.
- It doesn’t mean that we’re perfect, but it does mean that we are not going to hide behind a Beta badge forever like some services seem to want to do. The team behind Woopra passionately believes that we have the world’s finest Web analytics platform, and we will continue building upon it every day until we run out of ideas. And that ain’t happening any time soon!
- You can now add an additional Website at any time you wish without ever having to wait for approval again. Subscription plans are available starting at under $5 per month (less than a visit to Starbucks!), with Free plans to be made available via invitations that will come from you, our users, as soon as that system is completed.
- Sites with over 30,000 pageviews per month will need to upgrade to one of our paid plans in order to continue monitoring all of your stats; however, we have the most aggressive pricing plans in the industry! Feature for feature no one even comes close to the value that Woopra provides! And on top of that, you will have our deepest gratitude for helping to financially support our systems and development progress.
Let me just pop in here with a short video introduction to how our new billing system works. I believe you are going to find it to be one of the simplest systems you’ve ever used, as its about a 2 minute process to add or upgrade a website to any Woopra plan. Special thanks to Cali and Neal from GeekBrief.TV for their help with this video! You might want to maximize the video to full screen so you can see the screen shot details. Just select the little four arrows icon in the bottom right corner…
(PS – Do you remember when Geekbrief originally featured Woopra? We do!)
For those of you who participated in the discussion after my September State of the Union address a couple of weeks ago, thank you so much for your feedback! I read every single comment (and responded to many) because your feedback is always important to us. There were several take-aways from that conversation which I heard and acted upon:
- Pricing: The general consensus seems to be that most everyone is satisfied with our pricing tiers and the feature bundles. There was commentary suggesting that we break the bundles into a-la-carte pricing, and also that we keep the bundles together. We are opting to keep the bundles together, because breaking the packages will drive up individual feature pricing, and stifle future feature development. I’d rather worry about simply adding features than try and figure how how to nickel and dime our clients.
- SSL Support: There was quite a bit of passion from many users surrounding the topic of SSL support in the lower end packages. Whereas our starting pricepoint on packages including SSL was previously $29.95, I scrapped that plan altogether and we will make SSL available to all paying clients regardless of price point. So, you asked for it – you got it!
- Data Storage: Several people expressed concern about the length of data storage in the various plans. We have decided to up the storage period significantly on most of the plans, and we will work to offer add-ons or some other reasonable offering before we begin discarding old data. Look for more on this subject down the road a bit.
- Pageviews: Some of you made appeals for increasing the number of pageviews associated with each package. Although this is different than arguing for lower pricing tiers, it is still functionally equivalent to asking for lower prices. This is one area where we simply don’t have a lot of room. Especially after bringing SSL down into even the lowest pricing tiers and increasing retention for the higher tiers. However, you will notice that we have increased the number of pageviews in the plans since I introduced them a couple of weeks ago as a gesture of goodwill.
- Consolidate Multiple Websites: There are many requests to consolidate multiple Websites together for billing purposes. That is something we offer, but only to larger clients who are interested in being on a dedicated server. Those plans start well above the price points of the standard plans, but feel free to contact us if you are interested. For lower end packages, we will continue considering options such as a base price at a normal tier plus $1 per month for added domains, but currently that sophisticated logic would need to be built into our system and will have to come later.
- Subdomains: There were also requests to include subdomains along with their corresponding root domain, and this is something that we are indeed going to do (with some reasonable limitations.) We have the technical work scoped out to make this happen, but in the meantime if you are upgrading need this feature just let us know and we’ll take care of you.
By the way, we had a couple of people suggest that we come up with a “name” for our beta testers going forward so that you guys could carry a designation that sets you apart from the people who sign up later. We totally agree, and are working on that system. What would you like to be called? I want to make sure we never forget who the people were that helped us develop and bring this service to market. So stay tuned!
Now, the number one thing that you can do to help us continue to serve you and add features is to head on over to your Member’s Area and upgrade to any of our new paid plans. As always, on behalf of the entire Woopra team, I sincerely thank you for your business and your support.
Cheers,
John P.

Congrats!! A very exciting day for all at Woopra!
Fantastic news and congratulations on exiting beta.
I’ve been one of the early users for a long time now and am continually pleased with the analytical data I receive from Woopra.
I’ve tried a handful of the other tools out there, but keep falling back on my standard of Woopra. Now, as I’ve asked before – let’s get the iPhone app out and all will be wonderful.
Congrats again team
Android app too please!
Believe me guys, no one wants an iPhone app more than me. :-) It would be very nice to demo Woopra live whenever people ask me about it instead of having to ask them to imagine it. :-)
Cheers,
John P.
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! I wish you the best!
Congratz, Will paypal be added to the list of payment methods?
We’re looking at PayPal options for our international users. Thanks!
I’m glad to be able to participate in the beta, but I’ll have to remove Woopra from my website. I reached the 10000 pageview limit every day, and I can’t afford the plan that have the number of pageviews my website has monthly.
You should build a “lite” version that would track less information but handle more pageviews (and be free).
@Wesley: We’ll be tracking the response to all of this over the next few months and might make some changes with that, but remember, the free version is for personal, non-commercial sites.
My website is personal, I don’t sell any product or service through it.
As a name for the early adopters, how about “Oopras”?

I would use this, but, a couple of problems I see:
1) You’ll track up to 4 million pageviews/month with the Titanium, but if we want to do that with multiple websites it will cost considerably more? That doesn’t make any sense. It should cost about the same to track 4 million pageviews whether it’s on 1 site or multiple. Maybe I’m misunderstanding.
2) If we’re a business we can’t even get a free account to see if we like it? Not even a trial period?
Sorry to sound so pessimistic, I really like what I see and I think there is a real need for this. I’m hoping you guys are the answer.
Jacob,
Thanks for the feedback. We do want to be clear with our pricing model, which is why we had a very long discussion about it on the last blog post, but you might have missed that one…
Woopra does so many things, but I suppose it’s human nature that we each focus mainly on the part that we are specifically interested in. So let me point out that there is more to each of these pricing plans than simply the pageviews. It’s a combination of not only the traffic being placed on the server, but the number of potential live connections coming from the server to users assigned to any domain.
For example, the higher level packages also include the ability to share the account with many more users. In an enterprise environment, the stats might be shared with web developers, marketing personnel and executives – all of whom leave their Woopra clients open all day long. We’ve seen this happen over and over again. Each of those connections requires a constant stream of data to be sent, which puts a lot of load on the server.
Other stat systems, like Clicky for example, simply lack this capability (in addition to many other drawbacks) so they focus only on how many pageviews they can deliver. Even live chat users cost $50 a head with Live Person, but this is included at no additional cost with Woopra.
So hopefully this explains a little better why our model is different – not better or worse – than the competition. We simply offer a lot more stuff, but the value is certainly higher on a feature by feature comparison.
I have heard the requests that people have made to allow for some sort of a “combined usage” offering. And while no one in the industry simply allows as many domains as you want for a certain number of pageviews, we are investigating ways that perhaps we can allow pageview aggregation with some sort of add on fee per domain. Stay tuned to the blog for details when we figure that one out.
Cheers,
John P.
Indeed I have to look at the spots that will inhibit me from being a happy customer.
That is actually a completely understandable explanation. I can imagine how server intensive those front-end data views, especially if it’s real time.
That being said, I’ve got a lot of sites, it’s just me, and the total pageviews add up to about 4mm/month. For someone like me, I would end up buying something like 5 golds, 10 silvers, 10 bronzes, and 2 platinums which just seems out of whack to me. Anyway, I wouldn’t expect to be able to get 1 titanium account to encompass that, but I might be willing to purchase something that spanned a whole lot of sites for something like $200/month. You make double the price without it actually being much more intensive.
I don’t have a need for anybody else to be logged into my account pulling up dataviews other than myself. I also know a lot of other people like me :) Something to consider, I’d like to be a customer some day
Congrats on the click-off but please take away “And it’s free!” from the frontpage when it’s not. I went through the whole registration process (including some nasty jsp errors) only to find that free means “Requires Invitation”.
As Jacob above I would have probably settled for a trial period.
All the best
Sorry about the errors Carsten. We just got that remedied, and I know it was frustrating.
Please keep in mind that this new billing system was literally deployed about 12 hours ago. We are still making adjustments to some of the systems and our documentation that has been around for 18 months.
Having said that, we will indeed be issuing additional invitation codes, but we’ll make it more clear earlier in the process to save people time. We’ll also look into the possibility of creating a free trial period. In the meantime, I’d be happy to get you approved so you can indeed try it if you like. Just hit me up via email or Twitter and I’ll give you a code to register.
Cheers,
John
I am planning to have a commercial website soon. However, sicne I would be starting, my audience wouldn’t be that big to start with. Even though I will be selling products, since the audience will be close to 0 for the first few months, and I’m one of the original beta testers, can I get a free account until my site reaches the minimum for the paid plans?
Today i just tried to signup, but the confirm confirmation link/code u send is not working to make my account active. anyone from technical team could check fix this bug asap, so that let me try this Analytics tool once.
It’s a greas service but with the pageview plans it ist quiet uninteresting for pages with lots of pageviews and small budget :(

Congratulations! I am especially impressed by how you reacted on every single comment over at the first blog entry regarding the new price structure. Great that you’re trying to fulfill nearly every wish of the Woopra customers. Many thanks for giving SSL support to all of us! ;-)
I really love the desktop app. I keep that baby open all day. However, I would really like it if I could get the Chat tool to work. I have been testing it and can’t seem to get a two-way dialogue working.
@Darren Heitner: LOL. We’re considering a Woopra AA program – Analytics Anonymous. Some upgrades in browsers caught us off guard. We’re working to resolve the chat issues in the update coming out very soon.
@Matthias: We’re listening and reading EVERYTHING, which slows other things down, but your feedback is critical to us.
@E-TARD: I like the idea of the Woopra Pioneers. Nice!
I’m disappointed – I was very excited about joining Woopra and trying it out – only to discover that “free” meant I still required an invitation, not to mention that even getting to that point was frustrating because of errors!
And by he way, how do you get an invitation? Does this mean that another Woopra member will have to invite you?
And if I’m right, is there a way of reaching the invitacion code? Is impossible to see!
And now, congrats guys!
@cdiplomacia: Invites are now only available through Members. We might offer then another way, but later. Right now, get to know a Woopra Member. :D
I just wanted to mirror what Matthias commented in that you actually listened to what people were saying, figured out what was of value versus trying it on, and came back with a sensible answer that went way beyond what many of us expected.
Having experienced the hell that is an Un-In(ter)spired customer service approach from a nightmare e-Commerce product company this was the breath of fresh air that has kept me alive.
So, I’m paid up on one site and you’ve already saved me from two site and/or deal killing bugs that I introduced on my own site. So you’re already paying your way…
Just don’t lose the personal edge, please… *cue: on knees*.
Cheers…
Thanks very much for the positive feedback. It is truly appreciated.
Woopra is a different kind of a company. We’ve been taking and incorporating user feedback since we literally went beta in the very beginning. One could argue that our releasing so early in the development process was itself a result of taking feedback!
You know, I don’t understand why most companies make such a big deal about holding their customer’s at arms length when it comes to pricing and profitability. Obviously, Woopra is a business. The very definition of it is that we will need to make a profit, or we will cease to exist. If we can all just get beyond that then we can have a discussion about what is important to everyone. From there, we should reach common ground.
Just seems to make sense to me. Not that sense really matters in business.
Anyway, I’m very pleased to hear that you were pleasantly surprised. I always prefer to under-promise and over-deliver. And we are extremely grateful that you have shown your financial support to the cause!
Thanks, and cheers!
John P.
May you guive me an answer to my previous question?
sorry for my english.
do i need to buy a package for each website?
or in one package i can have more tha one site, only respecting the monthly pageviews limit?
in my dashboard i can buy a package, but it seems to be associated to every singular website.
is it right?the package is associated to website and not to account?
thanks
@Andrea: Currently, Woopra tracks each site individually, so yes, you must buy one package per website. The package is associated to the website not the account. You are right. And if you let us know your language, we can find a translator or use machine translation to help answer your questions much better. Thank you.
Great to see woopra out of beta :-)

Woopra,
We are thinking of adding different plans for different clients but I am unable to understand what exactly limited segmentation means in comparison to full segmentation. Also, what exactly do the email reports entail, I am unable to find mention of them. Thanks in advance for your responses.
I really like what you did with Woopra – especially the live tracking and tracking of outbound links.
Best,
Jey Pandian
@pandianj.lg: We’re working on the exact details. We have some new improvements and features coming to segmentation and reports that haven’t been released yet. Those will mostly be for paid customers, as well e-commerce features.
Email reports were tested for the past few months and they allow you to choose what data you would like to have sent to you and how often in custom email reports.
We have a lot of features we will be churning out over the next few months for our paid customers. You can change your account at any time. Thanks for your support and stay tuned for some exciting news.
The segmentation question is one that I have also.
I really appreciate the changes that have been made and now I need to decide on a silver or gold, but I can’t because I don’t understand the segmentation. Can you expand on the answer please.

Could you change the payment plans from “monthly views” to “daily views”? That would make the packages extremly intersting ;)
We looked at both Monthly and Daily views but based on a lot of feedback, Monthly Views allowed for more flexibility and seemed to be the overwhelming favorite. One of the key reasons has to do with traffic spikes. For example, if your site is dugg, on the daily plan you may reach your limit quickly and lose your view on what is happening during a very exciting time for your site. With the monthly limit, the risk is far smaller and you have time to change down the road if traffic is sustained or perhaps it averages out below the monthly level.
[...] Woopra is still in the early stages of development but we’ve jumped the broom and are now stepping out of beta testing, much earlier than most [...]
So we help you out, give you feedback, do all the beta testing for free and then you turn around and say “Pay up!”. Jeez. Google Analytics here I come. So long and thanks for the fish.
@rickdog: Sorry you missed the open discussions on the commercial side of Woopra. We’ve been very open about this from the beginning. It’s important that Woopra support free access, advanced features, and continued development.
Beta testers continue to have a free account. For this month, all beta testers have unlimited access to Woopra, including removal of all pageview limits previously imposed. We’re working on more benefits to Woopra beta testers and have recently asked them to help us give them a “name” so they will be honored for their contributions.
Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into giving us the feedback we needed, on Twitter, on our blog, and in the forums. With your help, Woopra is much improved and we’d love to have you continue with your support.

Excellent service – but we get 20,000 page views a day – as we do not make any money from the site (only losses) – I cannot justify the cost of either $30 or more likely $50 a month!
Shame there is no android widget either.
Ought to have added – this is worse when many of those page views are search engines. Not sure why I should in effect pay for a search engine to visit my site :(
Great changes made to the initial pricing plans, from my perspective, particularly the length of time data can be stored.
I also like that you haev been able to work with SSL, whic isn’t of interest to me, but I know was to many users. It is gret to work with a company that listens to the customer.
ALso good to hear that you are working on multi-domain accounts.
I am however now stuck.
I thought I would have to go for the gold plan, but because of the improved data storage I can go silver, except can I?
I saw another question on ’segmentation’ and have posed a query on that particular thread also. I really would like to know what the difference between full and part segmentation actually means as a customer, before going for the wrong plan. Because I am the type of person who ends up going for the wrong plan, either paying more than I need, or not getting what I need. Some of us really always do drop the toast butter side down.
Anarchyintheuk,
Well, here is the good news… If the changes we made help you out and you can fit into the silver plan then I’d recommend going for that. As far as the full segmentation vs partial is concerned, we’ll release more clarifications on that soon. But the good news is that if you go with Silver for now, you can upgrade to Gold at any time.
Of course, the opposite is also true. If you went with Gold, you could downgrade as of the next month as well.
Cheers,
John P.
John, congrads to you and your team! Thanks guys.

Great news. Glad to hear this. Your system is one of a kind and should be supported by all who love and need the internet.
Always been a big follower and have been there from the start.
Thanks
Ed
Thanks for your support Ed!
I think we need a beta test for the registration/payment form. Since the doors are now open for users to upgrade I think it’s important to be able to take those payments! :-)
If you’re from a country other than the US the “State” input field (when you register a credit card) will not be on the form. However, the form validation code appears to expect a state field and throws an error saying the form is incomplete. But there’s no such field to enter anything into. The result: you’re missing out on payments. I think someone should have a look at that ASAP.
Doah!
Thanks for the heads up Stefandidak. Yes, we need to “Beta” test the payment system. hehehe I’ll let Elie know, and we’ll get this fixed somehow.
I think it might also be useful to start another blog topic on this point to consolidate the feedback on these issues, so I’ll work on that too.
Thanks again!
John P.
I have been using the system for about 18 months. While its cool and neat – it does NOT work many days. I can not pay for something that only works 50% of the time. Unless you are going to offer half off pricing!!
Michael,
In the last 18 months, we’ve only had one single server out of our entire infrastructure fail and be unavailable for any substantial period of time. Outside of that one issue, the service was periodically offline for maintenance on occasions as we made routine upgrades; however, you should have noticed that your stats were never interrupted.
In other words, there may be brief occasions when you cannot access the stats because we are working on a system, but your stats are being counted 100% of the time anyway.
So, I’m sorry if you’ve been unfortunate enough that the timing has made it appear unavailable more than to the average person, but just know that the systems are running in the background all the time.
Having said all that, I don’t agree with the philosophy that if the service is not bullet-proof it’s not worth paying for. People pay the electric bill every month even though it isn’t working on occasion. We’ve put probably ten thousand man-hours of work or more into Woopra and we have a massive infrastructure to support. We need revenue to continue to operate. So, that position is basically saying, “well if you can’t do it perfectly the first time, then just shut down”.
So, we’d really like your support, but if you can’t find it in your heart to do so then I understand your position at least.
Cheers,
John P.
Hi Lorelle
I’m just a little confused. I’ve been a member since Feb. My site is just a little hobby thing and I’m not quite ready to buy a plan yet. When the “temporary” plan expires, will I be put on the free plan? Or is my Woopra going to stop working?
Thanks
Metz,
Don’t worry. You will be converted to Basic automatically. ;-)
When you are ready and able to help support us by bumping to a paid plan, we will appreciate it. Until then, feel free to continue as you are.
Cheers,
John P.
I think WOOPRA is worth paying!
Cause it is the best analytic system I’ve seen!
WOOPRA is worth paying them!
Yup, it is
Good Luck,
I run a successful Web Development company, yet I only receive less than two hundred unique’s a month, what makes you think I would even consider paying five dollars for your service?
From beta to history, good luck.
So, if you receive less than 200 per month, you will still be on a free account. Ummm… What is the issue?
Fantastic – thank you for all your hard work, it was well worth “waiting” and working through the things that needed to be done.
Congratulations. I’ve loved using Woopra but will have to say goodbye after my 30 day period as I don’t make money out of my site so I can’t justify spending money just to track how many page views we get a day. I just hope I can find a free plug-in to tell my how many page views we get.
@Leah: Thank you for helping with our beta testing phase. You do realize that there is a free account which all beta testers receive by default? For you, nothing may change. And you know Woopra is more than just tracking pageviews. :D
@Dave Hitt: Are you talking about the embedded video on this post or elsewhere? It’s on YouTube, so if there are ad there, we apologize. We’re saving money everywhere during our beta testing phase and haven’t paid for a commercial account on YouTube yet.
@mhf: Thanks for the help and support during our beta testing phase. It’s members like you who helped us make Woopra the best it can be, and more. Stay tuned for a lot of the feature requests to be coming out soon.
@jbrown: Good luck with your project and thank you for helping with the beta testing program. We’ve priced our basic paid plan to be less than a cup of latte for one month of service, which we think is more than reasonable, but we’re listening and may be making changes. Thanks again for all your support.
@Antoine: Thanks for your enthusiasm and support.
@Wesley: Then you will be able to continue with the free plan, with little change to how Woopra works for you. Thanks for helping up and continuing to use Woopra.
@metz: The temporary plan name is in place until you decide. You can choose to continue with the free plan or upgrade. At the end of the month, all temporary plans will automatically switch to the free plan, no worries.
@michael: Thanks so much for helping us during the beta testing phase. As part of beta testing, we explained to all users that there would be bumps along the road, which is part of the true definition of beta. We appreciate your patience. However, 50% is rather exaggerated. Woopra was rarely offline for more than a few minutes at a time and few stats were lost. With income, we can now put more money into servers and expanding our backups and mirrors.
@stefandidak: Thanks. With your help, we’ve improved our registration form. Thank you!!
@isdoo: Woopra doesn’t track search engine bots or crawlers. Only human traffic. It’s always been that way. We are working on a variety of mobile versions of Woopra.
@Ed Rowland, @Mark Tew: Thanks for the kind words and support. You’ve helped us so much. Thanks.
@anarchyintheuk: You can choose any plan you want, and change it at any time. We will be announcing the differences in our segmentation features soon. Mostly, it will involve segmentation regarding customized reports and analysis, and ecommerce features we’re bringing online soon. Some awesome custom tracking and tagging, too. We’re trying to be flexible and making changes during this “beta” test with registrations. Don’t worry, we’ll clean up the butter mess.
Please don’t force us to sit through long advertisements before seeing the video. It’s annoying and it sucks.
Dave,
I’m sorry. Viddler is appending those at the moment, and I can’t figure out how to get them turned off. They put me on some sort of a program (because my videos get viewed a lot) to be helpful, now I just need to learn how to control it.
Sorry again, and I’m going to try and get those turned off.
Cheers,
John P.
I suggest that us Beta Testers be called “Woopites”. Or “Wooprers”. Or “Whooper-Snappers”.
Thanks Lorelle, Your hard work all this time has been amazing and I don’t know how you kept up with it all. Hope ya get a big fat bonus when all this settles in. Love your blog to. Thats’s where I found Woopra.
All the best!
@metz: Thanks for the kind words. We’re all working hard here at Woopra. We love it so much. It’s exciting to be so passionate about something you know is changing people’s lives. Thanks!
I’ve loved having the chance to work with Woopra Beta and will continue to support. This is a great tool to show potential clients, letting them know you have the ability to track their sites live.
When I whip out Woopra the eyes grow bigger, jaws open wider, drooling starts, and questions of how they can become a client begin.
Thanks,
Scott

Seriously though, the video was also designed to ensure that as people were going through it, it functioned as expected on the other end. Kind of like a baseline for reference. If your experience was different it would set off a red flag and you’d hopefully let us know.
Hey, look on the bright side. At least you got to see Cali Lewis! She’s a whoooole lot better to look at than me.

Well I’m going to have to delete my account. Looks like I’m over the threshold for a basic account and can’t afford to be paying for something that doesn’t actually give much useful data compared to the likes of Google Analytics.
I REALLY love Woopra. I’ve loved Woopra since I became a user over 18 months ago.
But I have feared this moment when the pricing plans arrived… I have a site with 350.000 page views per month, so even though i don’t need email reports, SSL, Segmentation and sharing, I’m forced to go with the Gold plan for 30$ per month!
I would really love if you get a plan with high page views without having to say yes to advanced features that I don’t need anyway… I hope for your understanding…
Kind Regards From a Happy Beta-tester

We appreciate your perspective, however, the added features aren’t as expensive as the loads on our servers for that kind of traffic. With that kind of traffic, I sure hope you are taking advantage of it and it helps pay your bills! That’s nice. Congrats.
We’re working on a ton of new features in the future that might appeal to you and justify the added costs, and we are constantly listening to our Member’s input and rethinking what we are doing, so maybe we might in the future.
Thanks for your continued support!
Woopra should charge for commercial sites and still give free analytics for personal blogs that exist merely for love of blogging.
@rickdog: We researched this option and wanted to do this, but unfortunately there isn’t a quantitative test to distinguish love of blogging from love of money, and greed. ;-) We worked on a trust basis for our first two years, and we continue to do so with our free plan, which is specifically offered to personal and non-commercial sites who exist, we hope, merely for the love of blogging.
Hi John,
Is there a trial version or something I can try for a month or so? I mean am quite satisfied with google analytics, and would like to know how different is woopra
Sign up and choose the Basic free account for personal non-commercial sites to test drive Woopra. If you would like to try one of the higher pageview and feature services, you can sign up and cancel at any time. Thanks.
