Seems we need Java 6 to run the Woopra desktop app and Java 6 is only available for Intel Macs ... is this correct? If so, this is a terrible omission. Is there a workaround or any plans within Woopra to make a desktop app that people running Leopard on Power-PC Macs can use?

Sun Java 6 beta for Mac is only available in 64bit intel format. PowerPC and 32bit Intel macs are left in the dark, at least so far. Sun has not announced whether the final release will support 32bit systems or PowerPC. So this is entirely dependent on that.

I am installing SoyLatte on my 32bit Intel MacBook. Hopefully that will run Woopra.

Personally, I think Adobe Air would be a GREAT platform for Woopra.

Does anyone know if there is even a plan to come up with a work-around for PowerPC-based Mac users? I am one of those - two Macs, both PowerPCs, both fully tricked out with max memory and extra-large hard drives so it's going to be QUITE a while before I can upgrade to Intel Macs. For several reasons, using Parallels and Windows on my Macs is NOT an option.

I'd hate to think that a fairly significant portion of potential users will be left in the dark.....

I'm very disappointed that the Woopra desktop app does not work with PPC Macs. Wouldn't that be comparable to making a Woopra app that would only run on Vista and not on XP? I think it's somewhat short-sighted (and maybe a little unfair) to support only Intel Macs. Please, please, please make a PPC version of Woopra desktop!

So apparently none of the Head Wooprites cares about this issue, is that what we PPC users should just accept?

Seriously, I'm not going to run out and spend a couple of grand on a new MacBook Pro just so I can use (what everyone tells me is) the best stats suite out there.

I'd like to hear someone who runs Woopra tell us why a PPC version isn't in the works and why such a version isn't going to happen.

  • Folks,

Woopra is built using the Java 6 platform. What can I tell you? This is not a Woopra issue, but a Java development issue. We have 18 months of development built into the system, both client and server must work together, so it's not like we can just whip out another version.

Please don't take that as me not being empathetic, because I am. I really, really want you to get to use the system, and I want you to be able to do it on any platform. But my desire doesn't translate into reality.

What I do know for certain is that if you run Parallels, you can use the Win or Linux versions from within the PPC Mac. There are other virtualization options as well such as Xen or VMware that will do the same thing. So, it is much, much easier for our PPC based Mac users to install a virtualized environment than it is to re-engineer the entire product.

I know you're hoping to hear that the PPC support will be available soon, but I just can't tell you that. If the Java developers release the code for that platform, then Woopra will work on it. If they do not, we have limited options.

Hi John - I understand your dilemma, but for some of us running Windows on our Macs is just not an option.

How about starting an online petition to let the Java developers know that there is an unserved segment of users out here......I'll be the first to sign and will do my best to publicize it so that we can get a lot of signatures..... pretty please?

Both Parallels and VMware are virtualization software, they REQUIRE an Intel based Mac to run. PPC users have no options for virtualization.

Umm, no. As the gent above me just said, Parallels runs on intel only. I just got approved, and realized the reason I forgot about it was that dowg don't hunt.

Geez, cry me a river, willya?

I would love to have Microsoft Access on my Mac, but it's hardly "unfair" that such an animal doesn't exist. Companies choose the platforms they are going to program for, and if you don't have it you either adapt or use a different product.

Until very recently I only had a G4 Mac myself. I put Woopra on my Windows machine at work and checked it out during lunch.

Either way, you have the website, which is limited, but has good info on it.

I'm fine with the fact that the software was developed for systems other than mine, I know my PPC is a bit outdated. But, I would have liked to have known this before I got excited when Paul Boag recommended it, came to the site and was blown away by what it could do, spent 2-3 weeks waiting on approval and time downloading and installing the client only to find that it doesn't work. Please put a warning closer to the front of the process.

Now I'll start over on my PC that I rarely use and don't carry with me.

Disappointed but working around, hopefully it will be worth it.
