Visitor Numbers Are WAY Too Big

  • Looking at my analytics today I noticed huge (and inconsistent) numbers of visitors from certain countries, and other oddities.

I haven't used Woopra in a while so I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I just updated my Wordpress widget before opening Woopra today.

I have a small site and never get many visitors - usually just family and a few friends. But Woopra is reporting over 10,000 queries for "214 Studios" (the name of my site; my next highest search query term has only 16 hits, to give some perspective). Under Visitors>>Countries, it is showing 3500 from Japan, 2500 from Switzerland, and 500+ from Netherlands and Canada, while only 152 from the US (this last number seems the most realistic). Also, over 5,000 visitors stayed 10-20 minutes, which is again very unlikely. 5120 viewers using Safari 3 - that's eight times more than all the other browsers combined. One last thing: when I do a search for recent visitors, I get zero results.

Sorry for all of the specifics, but I thought it might help someone diagnose the problem. I'd like to be getting such high numbers of visitors, but I don't think that is what is happening. Anyone know what is going on? Please help.

  • Just to add that my alltime visitor number is showing as 922 even though it says I have 4700+ views from visitors using Safari. Deleted and reinstalled my Wordpress plugin, just in case, but still don't know what is going on.

  • Sounds like your site was attacked. If it was different IPs that would account for the low visitor counts. Then for each time they loaded up a page that would count as a view.
